On August 11, 2014 police
were dispatched to a residence on Mohawk Trail for a fraud complaint. The elderly victim reported she received a
phone call from a subject who claimed to be an attorney and that her grandson
was in custody for a DUI accident. The
subject advised the victim to respond to two pharmacies and purchase 8 -
$500.00 dollar Green Dot MoneyPak’s and provide the pin number for same to
satisfy the bail for her grandson. The
victim provided the pin numbers and was advised to purchase an additional
$500.00 dollars via MoneyPak after the subject stated her grandson’s friend,
also needed bail money. The victim’s
total loss was $4,544.55.
Green Dot MoneyPak cards are
not linked to bank accounts and are treated as money. Anyone you share your card number with, has
instant access to the cash that is on the card.
There are numerous scams involving MoneyPak cards and residents are
urged to not give anyone their MoneyPak numbers. Borough residents and business owners should
contact the Medford Lakes Police Department at 609-654-2156 or 609-267-8300 if
they receive any suspicious phone calls regarding possible scams.
