On August 11, 2014 police were dispatched to a residence on Mohawk Trail for a fraud complaint.  The elderly victim reported she received a phone call from a subject who claimed to be an attorney and that her grandson was in custody for a DUI accident.  The subject advised the victim to respond to two pharmacies and purchase 8 - $500.00 dollar Green Dot MoneyPak’s and provide the pin number for same to satisfy the bail for her grandson.  The victim provided the pin numbers and was advised to purchase an additional $500.00 dollars via MoneyPak after the subject stated her grandson’s friend, also needed bail money.  The victim’s total loss was $4,544.55.

Green Dot MoneyPak cards are not linked to bank accounts and are treated as money.  Anyone you share your card number with, has instant access to the cash that is on the card.  There are numerous scams involving MoneyPak cards and residents are urged to not give anyone their MoneyPak numbers.  Borough residents and business owners should contact the Medford Lakes Police Department at 609-654-2156 or 609-267-8300 if they receive any suspicious phone calls regarding possible scams.
